A striking remnant of an urban redevelopment initiative, renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin's Manhattan Square Park has recently enjoyed a two-phase makeover which has resulted in an increased sense of security, expanded "play" options, and the promise of a restoration back to Halprin's original vision. A sculptural, but ill-fated skywalk has prompted widespread and healthy design debate; but the underlying (literally and figuratively) water features have recently received community approval in the form of a revamped ice skating rink and fountain, as well as funding for a study of the viability of reopening Halprin's "waterfall" feature beneath the skywalk.
